Main research interests:

  • Akkadian literature of all genres, mainly from the Old Babylonian period (c. 19001500 BCE). Special attention is given to incantations, wisdom literature, and love lyrics. Two monographs are in their final stages of preparation: a book on Akkadian love literature of the 3rd2nd millennium, and a book on Akkadian incantations of the 3rd2nd millennium.
  • Realia and material culture in ancient Mesopotamia, as reflected in cuneiform texts: medicine, pharmacology, cosmetics, etc.
  • Together with Prof. Michael P. Streck of the Altorientalisches Institut, Universität Leipzig, Nathan Wasserman runs the internet site Sources of Early Akkadian Literature (SEAL) which comprises a hierarchical catalogue of all Akkadian literary texts of the 3rd2nd millennium by genres and period. SEAL contains many new editions, commentaries and glossaries.
  • A new project, together with Pro. Annette Zgoll, Seminar für Altorientalistik, Georg-August Universität, Göttingen, deals with Mythological texts and their inner literary structure.

Nathan Wasserman teaches regularly Akkadian, Akkadian literature, and Mesopotamian history.
