M.A. thesis topic: The Necropolis of Tiberias during the Roman and Byzantine Periods.

Advisor: Dr. Uzi Leibner

Abstract:

Since the beginning of the 20th century a large number of salvage excavations were conducted in modern Tiberias. During those excavations more than 250 tombs were discovered in an area of about 600 dunam (148 acres). These graves were identified mainly as Jewish and were dated to the Late Roman, Byzantine and Early Islamic periods. A few of them were properly published while the rest was partly published or not published at all. By collecting and analyzing all the tombs and related finds found in Tiberias, the research will contribute to our understanding not only of burial customs, but also the religions, social, economic and cultural diversity of the population of this major city.
