Abstract:

The pottery workshops at the site of Binyanei Ha'Uma (Jerusalem) produced vessels since the Hasmonean period and up to the Late Roman period. The pottery workshops were established by Jewish potters who produced mainly cooking ware. After the First Jewish Revolt (70 CE) the workshops continued to work in a more limited form, and the vessels repertoire has changed. Instead of cooking ware they began producing roof tiles, bricks and pipes for the Tenth Legion's use. During the 2nd century, the Tenth Legion founded on top of the ancient assemblages its own pottery workshops.
My research aims to identify the ethnic group who worked in the pottery workshops and who created the new repertoire in the period between the First Revolt and the Bar Kokhba Revolt. Were these the same Jewish potters who worked at the site before the First Revolt or were they the Legion's potters who used the existing workshops facilities to make their own pottery? This will be answered by examining the archaeological remains of the late 1st/early 2nd c. phase and by analyzing the pottery production technology.
